Special Pre-Conference Workshop
Pathway to Proficiency: Using Proficiency Benchmarks and Performance Indicators to Guide Instruction

Presenter: Laura Terrill
Thursday, November 1, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m
Additional Fee – $45

Consider how the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can Do Statements are used to focus performance expectations for unit and lesson learning targets from Novice to Advanced. Use proficiency benchmarks to identify what students can do and select appropriate strategies for moving students to the next range of performance. Work with strategies for maintaining target language use and making input comprehensible in the interpretive mode. Explore strategies that improve presentational skills as students engage in inquiry, elaboration, summarizing, revision and editing. Create effective pair and small group activities that lead to purposeful interactions among learners in the interpersonal mode. Use actionable feedback to improve student performance to strengthen communication skills.

Keynote: We Are All Advocates

Presenter: Ted Zarrow

A world language education is civil right, and to deny a child access to world languages is to deny them access to a world class education! We are the key to this happening – the classroom teacher is the linchpin to successful language advocacy in this country – real language advocacy begins with what we teach and show our students every day. If we are to see languages on the rise, and if we are to lead with languages, we must all be advocates.
