Have you considered a career in world language education?
We are Andrea Behn and Ellen Onsrud, both French teachers in South Central Wisconsin. We started an initiative through the Wisconsin Association for Language Teachers (WAFLT) called Career Changers. With this initiative, we are hoping to find students and professional adults who have language background and may consider careers as world language teachers. Career Changers is a direct result of the teacher shortage in Wisconsin with the recognition that programs, especially for languages with fewer students, could be eliminated if teachers cannot be found.
Because the people we are looking for are not in education, we have faced several challenges promoting this initiative, however we know they are out there! Several university instructors suggested we create a document and reach out to you with the facts about what we do. Attached you will find a Google Slides presentation explaining our goals and affiliations, job openings per language (which we will update), and ways we can help. We recognize that each individual’s situation is unique and their needs are different.
We have a Facebook group people can join called World Language Career Changers. The group is for questions potential Career Changers may have and there are several teachers in the members who can offer support. Additionally, we are hoping you would consider sharing the Google Slides presentation with students, especially those in language classes, as well as consider sharing it with colleagues and other stakeholders in education.
In the last two years we have worked with five Career Changers. Several are pursuing education and one, after a day shadowing a teacher, discovered it wasn’t for her. We consider all of these successes.
As we look toward a globally competent Wisconsin, we thank you for your help continuing to build and support the foundation for language learning. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
